The Farm
Introduction Text

History & Background

The 1000 acre Detchant Farm, primarily arable, is also home to over 400 head of cattle. The farm is situated on the beautiful Northumbrian coastline nestled between Lindisfarne Bay and the Cheviot Hills. Christine Jackson, the youngest of 4 daughters and her eldest sister Catherine Armstrong run the egg business; Catherine is also responsible for the financial performance of the whole farm. Christine is currently the 2007 young Nuffield scholar of the year and is part way through studying the development of marketing and production in the free range egg sector.

The farm was awarded the Border Crop & Grassland Management Competition Championship Class Winners trophy in 2007 and we are also heavily involved in the Government Countryside and Entry Level Stewardship Schemes. This has resulted in a massive hedge and tree planting scheme over the whole farm. In addition to this we have also created over 20 hectares of new wildlife habitat.

Company Overview

Sunnyhill Free Range Eggs has three hen houses housing a total of 38,000 free range hens. Our original house was built in August 2005 and houses 16,000 birds, a second house closely followed in July 2006 which houses another 16,000 birds. In August we opened our third house which is an organic house with 6000 birds, split into two flocks of 3000. We have recently been awarded planning consent for another 16,000 house, which will come on stream in June 2008. As further part of this we propose to install a state of the art Natura laying system.
