2007-04-16

‘It’s no’what ye hae, it’s what you dae with what you hae’, competition motto for the Border Crop and Grassland Awards is certainly applicable for the 2007 overall winner of the Championship class, Messers J R Jackson, of Detchant Farm near Belford. This is a family farming business that has certainly maximised what they have and as a result were last week awarded the Fenwick Jackson Cup.

Farming 1000 acres (primarily arable 800 acres, 400 herd of cattle) near Belford in Northumberland along with their father Robert, sisters Catherine and Christine last year, opened a free rang egg production unit. With 32, 000 laying hens they are now the largest producers of Free Range Eggs in North East supplying many retail and supermarket outlets.

Detchant Farm is a real family farming enterprise with both Catherine and Christine working hard to cement their own future and further family generations. Catherine Armstrong, one of the partners, knows that to win this award, is a huge accolade and very special to Messrs JR Jackson:-

“We are honoured to have won the competition. The cup was donated by my father’s uncle many years ago so, therefore it is extra special for us. We are very proud of our farm and all the people involved in making the business worthy of such a prestigious prize. When your efforts are recognised by your peers in the industry it makes the whole job of running a business much more rewarding.”
