A Good Egg gives Poultry Support to Falcons
2006-12-20
Newcastle Falcons mascot, Flash the falcon, has been joined by 32,000 birds with real feathers – the sporty hens of Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs. Together, they [the hens] will support the club, not with clapping, cheering and singing, but with tasty free-range eggs. The reason - Sunny Hill has just won a contract to supply its eggs to the Falcons Catering Team. So much is their loyalty to their new customers that the sister’s have even bought rugby balls for their happy hens to play with.
With 32, 000 laying hens, the Sunny Hill sister’s are the largest producers of Free Range Eggs in the North East Region. Launched by sisters Christine and Catherine Jackson less than four months ago they are delighted that alongside the individuals, restaurants and hotels choosing to buy local they are now seeing sporting venues such as The Newcastle Falcons buying local produce. Increasingly more and more people consider food miles and local sourcing and this is definitely the case with Sunny Hill.
“Farmers are being encouraged to supply local produce to local people and it is not just the individuals who are purchasing our eggs. It’s great when big local enterprises like the Falcons give us a sporting chance to supply the best local produce that they need.”
Paul Graham, Head Chef at the Newcastle Falcons, is keen to support local producers but finds that this is not always possible: “Our team relies on local support, and we should make sure that we support local people right back, where we can. Sometimes this can be difficult due to supply and demand, with some of the smaller producers unable to provide the large quantities. But Sunny Hill can easily guarantee us year round continuity of supply and our team could tell from the outset that they were a quality free range product. The eggs are extremely fresh and therefore perfect for poaching and frying and they have a fantastic taste and colour. Like us they’re winners!”
Interest in their eggs has been so phenomenal that Christine and Catherine have almost doubled their projected local sales, and with the considerable interest from many of the region’s main tourist attractions and the smaller hotels for 2007 this trend is set to continue.
For 2007 the Sunny Hill sisters are hoping to encourage both residents and visitors to the region to “Begin their day on a Sunny Hill!”
