Double Yoked Free Range Eggs!
2008-09-08
Sunny Hill Free Range Eggs, the largest producer of free range eggs in North East England have announced earlier today that it is amalgamating with the largest producer of Free Range Eggs in the Scottish Borders- Oxenrig Eggs. By combining the two businesses, Sunny Hill will increase their egg production by over 50% and when they take over the business in 2008 they aim to have in the region of 54,000 laying hens. The amalgamation with Oxenrig will enable Sunny Hill to further expand sales in the North East market place and open doors into the Scottish markets.
Oxenrig began life as a farm-based round in 1988 by Peter Calder. Today they are the foremost egg producers in the Scottish Borders. With over 20,000 free range hens they distribute to outlets across the Scottish Borders, Northumberland, Edinburgh and the Lothians. Sarah Calder of Oxenrig said:
“It has been a growing concern as our business has steadily grown, that there has been an obvious need for more hens at Oxenrig. Being restricted by our tenancy at Oxenrig coming to an end in 2009, we have been looking for an answer to allow our business to continue to grow. We both have felt strongly that the brand that we had created must not be allowed to disappear.
The amalgamation with Sunny Hill will allow Oxenrig Free Range Eggs to develop at the rate it needs to, providing their customer’s with a 'border egg' that has been created in the same old way!"
Catherine Armstrong, director of Sunny Hill, is enthusiastic about the new acquisition and keen to point out that customers and consumers will continue to receive the same quality of service and product as they were getting from Oxenrig:
"We were delighted Oxenrig felt confident enough to approach us with a view to amalgamating the two companies, we have the same standards and goals and so see this as a positive progression. It’s a huge responsibility to take on Oxenrig and Christine my sister and I are very proud to have been given the opportunity to take this strong brand forward.”
Sunny Hill Eggs started life 18 months ago, and is based at Detchant Farm near Belford, Northumberland. With 38,000 hens in this short time they have cracked the North Eastern Market, becoming one of most talked about farm-based producers in the region. The combined company will allow the business to expand further on its current success.
